SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY |
| A screening mammogram is a low dose X-ray of the breast used to detect breast changes in women who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. It usually involves two views of each breast. Mammograms make it possible to detect tumors that cannot be felt. Mammograms can also find microcalcifications (tiny deposits of calcium in the breast) that sometimes indicate the presence of breast cancer. This examination is often considered a “routine” examination and may be applied to routine or well-woman benefits. |

DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAPHY |
A diagnostic mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that is performed to evaluate potential breast problems. It usually requires two or more images of the breast to be taken at different angles. This is to ensure that our radiologists get a clear and accurate picture of your breasts. It may be scheduled to:
1. Look more closely at an area of concern that was found on a screening mammogram
2. Follow a patient with a history of breast cancer
3. Check an area that is benign but requires short-term follow-up
4. Evaluate a current breast concern such as a lump, thickening or discharge
This exam is not considered “routine”, “well-woman”, or a “screening” to insurance carriers. If you have routine or well-woman benefits, this exam is not normally covered under those benefits. Most diagnostic mammography billing is applied to diagnostic benefits which in most cases include a co-pay, deductible and/or co-insurance. |

RECALL DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAPHY |
| A recall diagnostic mammogram is performed when the radiologist has requested additional images after reviewing your screening mammogram. There is an additional claim billed to insurance for the diagnostic mammogram. |

TECHNICAL REPEAT MAMMOGRAPHY On occasion (very infrequently) we need to bring a patient back to repeat one or more views of the mammogram because of a technical problem. In these rare instances, those specific views will be repeated at no additional charge. If at that time, a possible radiographic abnormality is detected and follow-up studies are needed, there will be an additional charge billed as a diagnostic mammogram. |
