Diagnostic Mammogram

A diagnostic mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that is performed to evaluate potential breast problems.  It usually requires two or more images of the breast to be taken at different angles. This is to ensure that our radiologists get a clear and accurate picture of your breasts. It may be scheduled to:

  1. Look more closely at an area of concern that was found on a screening mammogram

  2. Follow a patient with a history of breast cancer

  3. Check an area that is benign but requires short-term follow-up

The following are answers to the most common questions specific to this procedure:

How is a diagnostic mammogram different from a screening mammogram?
A diagnostic mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is used to provide the physician with a more focused set of images of areas of concern that were detected on a screening mammogram, or to view mammographically a lump or other complaint. A diagnostic mammogram usually involves taking more images of the breast than is done in a typical screening mammogram. In addition to the types of views done during a screening mammogram, your diagnostic mammogram may also involve spot compression and magnification views to zoom in on a particular area of interest in the breast.

How long will I be at the Solis office for a diagnostic mammogram?
When you are called back for a diagnostic mammogram, plan to spend at least two hours in our office.  You may complete the visit in much less time; however it is the practice at Solis breast centers to perform all procedures necessary to provide you with a diagnosis.

What other procedures might be performed?
That depends on your individual situation.  However, we can perform most procedures needed to pinpoint or assess an area of concern in our office. These include an ultrasound, a physical breast examination, an ultrasound-guided biopsy or a biopsy performed under stereotactic guidance.

When will I get the results?
After the mammogram and any other imaging tests are complete, you will receive the results – usually before you leave.  The Solis radiologist will interpret the mammogram in the center's diagnostic mammogram reading room, as well as any other tests that were performed, and will meet with you briefly before you leave.  If a biopsy is performed, the tissue samples must be sent to the pathologist for review, but we typically receive the results back within 48 hours.

What if cancer is found?
If breast cancer is found, our staff will spend time with you and your family members discussing your results and what your next steps should be, and answer any questions that you might have.  Before you leave, our office will also notify your referring physician, and will assist in coordinating your appointment with the surgeon you choose, or the surgeon who is selected by your referring physician.
